Wine Racks are primarily used for storage of cork sealed bottles, it is recommended to store wine in a horizontal position as it is a way of ensuring that the cork seal stays wet.

If stored upright, natural corks can dry out, this can cause shrinkage, compromising the airtight seal and leading to 'corked' wine which tastes like vinegar. Oxygen is one of wine’s worst enemies, so it’s important to take care of the bottle’s seal.

Bottles with screw top lids or plastic corks are exceptions to the belly down rule. Nevertheless, you may still wish to store all wine horizontally as bottles laid down take up less room & you can fit more in your wine storage rack.
